Animation is not a genre; it is a medium, and calling it a kids' category is the single most common mistake audiences make. What animation does is unbounded: it can render a feeling as weather, a memory as a room, a world that a camera could never enter. The only limit is what the artists can draw — and lately, what they can imagine.

That is why animation keeps landing emotional punches that live action cannot. A character's expression, the weight of a silence, the physics of a dream — animation controls all of it, frame by frame, and the best of it uses that control to say something precisely.

Use it for: the family film that is secretly for the adults, the anime epic, the experimental feature that remakes what a film can be. Don't expect it for: a single age group — the best animation is for everyone.

Judge animation the way you would any film. The medium is the message, not the rating.
