The genre of rules, broken — and the people who break them.
Crime is where storytelling and sociology meet. Every crime story is a story about the rules — who makes them, who breaks them, and what happens after. That is why it has produced some of the most durable television and film of the past fifty years, from the heist to the procedural to the mob epic.
The genre splits cleanly in two: stories about the criminals, and stories about the people who chase them. The best of it refuses to stay on one side. It is interested in the grey space where a detective and a thief turn out to share the same obsession.
Use it for: the sprawling saga you watch for weeks, the tight heist you rewatch for the mechanics, the true-crime procedural that respects the facts. Don't expect it for: moral simplicity — crime is the genre of moral grey.
Heists are their own reward: the planning, the crew, the one thing that goes wrong, the impossible improvisation. Watch them for the craft.
