Drama

Drama is the widest genre there is, which is why it is also the hardest to pin down. Strip away the car chases, the laughs and the jump scares and what is left — people making decisions and living with them — is drama. It is the default language of prestige television and the reason the word "serious" keeps showing up next to a title.

That breadth is the point. A courtroom procedural, a family slowly falling apart over a holiday, a biopic, a coming-of-age story: all drama, none of them alike. The only shared promise is that the story is about character before plot, about what happens inside a person before what happens to them.

Use it for: the show everyone says you should have seen, the film that wins the arguments, the series you watch slowly and think about. Don't expect it for: a clean genre contract — drama will borrow from thriller, romance and comedy without telling you.

The best of it earns the length. A two-hour drama that feels long has failed; a ten-hour drama you do not want to end is the whole reason the form exists.
