The genre of worlds that never were — built with the care of real ones.
Fantasy is world-building as an art form. Its promise is total immersion: a realm with its own geography, history, magic and rules, constructed carefully enough that you stop noticing the construction. The best of it does not just show you a dragon — it makes you believe in the place the dragon lives.
The genre has grown up from its fairy-tale roots into something sprawling and serious. Modern fantasy is as likely to be a political saga, a family drama or a war story as it is a quest — it just happens to be set somewhere the map has no name for.
Use it for: the epic you sink into for a season, the coming-of-age quest, the mythology built from scratch. Don't expect it for: brevity — fantasy wants room to build its world.
The test of a great fantasy is homesickness. If you miss the place when it is over, it worked.
