Horror
The genre you watch to feel something — and to feel it safely.
Horror is the genre of controlled fear, and it is far smarter than its reputation. It takes the anxieties of its moment — isolation, contagion, the thing in the dark, the thing in the family — and gives them a shape you can turn off when the credits roll. That is the whole trick: fear, delivered at a safe distance, with permission to enjoy it.
The range is broader than outsiders think. It runs from slow-burn dread to gory mayhem, from the supernatural to the all-too-human, from a single unsettling image to a house that is also a character. What unites it is intent: to make your pulse do something.
Use it for: the shared scream of a group watch, the solo test of nerve, the seasonal October ritual. Don't expect it for: a calm night — horror is the one genre that openly refuses to be background.
Start with the quiet ones if you are new to it. Dread is a better teacher than gore.
