The genre that turns the audience into the detective.
Mystery is the genre of the unanswered question, and it is unique in how it recruits you. It does not just show you a story — it hands you the pieces and dares you to assemble them first. A body, a secret, a discrepancy; the audience leans in, because the genre's real subject is not the crime but the act of figuring it out.
The satisfaction is structural. A good mystery promises that the answer exists, that the clues were always there, and that the reveal will reward the attention you paid. The bad ones cheat; the great ones make you want to start over and watch yourself miss it again.
Use it for: the whodunnit, the slow-burn investigation, the rewatchable puzzle with the clue hidden in the first scene. Don't expect it for: closure you did not earn — mystery makes you work for it, on purpose.
Watch it with someone, if you can. Two people always see different things.
