The genre that asks "what if" — and then actually follows through.
Science fiction is the genre of the idea made concrete. It takes a single premise — a technology, an alien arrival, a change in the rules of reality — and follows it wherever it honestly leads. That follow-through is what separates real science fiction from action with robots in it.
The genre has two faces. One looks outward: spaceships, first contact, the frontier. The other looks inward: artificial intelligence, memory, the self. The best science fiction does both at once — a story about a machine that turns out to be a story about being human.
Use it for: the premise you cannot stop thinking about, the world you want to map, the idea film that rewards a second watch. Don't expect it for: hand-holding — good sci-fi trusts you to keep up.
Come with your full attention. The genre's best ideas are often delivered in a single quiet scene.
