Escape into another world

Some nights the best thing a film can do is be a door. You do not want a story about your life, or anyone's real life. You want a fully realized other world — a fantasy realm, a sprawling adventure, a universe with its own rules and its own weather — and you want to step into it.

This is world-building, the most expensive and most generous trick a film can pull off. It is not just special effects; it is the accumulated detail of a place that feels *lived in*, with history and geography and stakes you believe. The best of them make you homesick for somewhere that has never existed.

Escapism gets a bad name, unfairly. Stepping into another world for two hours is how a lot of us recharge — it is not avoidance, it is a reset. You come back with your own problems still there, but with a little more room to breathe around them.
