Max is the most "serious" of the streaming services, and it knows it. HBO has spent four decades building the prestige-television brand — The Sopranos, The Wire, Succession, The Last of Us — and that back catalogue is the spine of the service. Around it sits the Warner Bros. film library, from the Criterion-adjacent classics to the DC and Harry Potter franchises.

The character of the catalogue is adult and cinematic. This is where you go for a slow-burn drama, a landmark miniseries, or a film you feel you "should" have seen. It is weaker on light family fare and on the volume of cheap originals the other services churn out.

Use it for: prestige drama, classic film, and event television. Don't expect it for: a huge rotating list of new low-stakes content, or a bargain price.

If you only keep one "quality over quantity" subscription, this is the usual answer.
